The Coastal Area

The coastal area near Dorchester is very interesting, it includes some nine miles of the remarkable geological formation known as the Chesil Beach. This vast, raised bank of graduated pebbles extends from Portland to Bridport and encloses the estuary, or sea backwater, known as the Fleet.

On the seaward side the Chesil Beach slopes very steeply into the West Bay and in earlier times any ship which was forced in here by the prevailing winds would be battered to pieces against this treat bank of stones or flung right over into the Fleet.
