No. 6 is a very pleasant restaurant in the heart of Dorchester run by Christian Lohez and his wife Sylwia. They do an excellent job of greeting guests on arrival, their staff are both pleasant and well trained and the food is quite excellent.

I can whole heartedly recommend the fillet steak, I like mine medium rare and it was done to perfection. I couldn’t let me wife eat all the Creme Brulee that she ordered as my first taste so excited my taste buds that I stole the remainder from her!

In the summer there’s outside dining but in the colder months it’s restricted to the cosy and friendly inside area. Call and book as it’s a popular place for a good reason!

Today I took a trip, shopping with my wife in Dorchester and that included a visit to a new client to see how their business was doing and I’m very glad that I did, it was both an unusual and thoroughly enjoyable experience.

I’m talking, of course, about the Town Mill Bakery in Dorchester where we were greeted by a very happy and smiling host called Soph in a spacious room decorated with a rustic and hardy wooden feel to it, I would go as far to say it felt robust and in this day and age of most things you touch falling apart, that’s a big compliment even if I don’t say it about eating establishments much!

As first timers in the establishment, I needed a little help getting myself orientated and Soph was at hand to provide the help I needed.

The Town Mill Bakery works on a system that I’ve seen before but generally in Hotels, on arrival, we found somewhere to sit, asked for coffees from Soph and walked up to the bench where breakfast was laid out. we cut our own slices from a big crusty loaf and placed them in the toaster, once out of the toaster we carried them to the table on rustic looking wooden slabs in stead of plates and tucked in to the butter, honey, preserves etc. on offer.

As an all in price for the breakfast (£2.50 per person), we did the same again, this time I went mad and had a hard boiled egg on my toast (extra £1) which was very hot and done to perfection. After that we went to the till on the way out and “confessed” to what we’ve eaten which was duly rung up and charged, made payment and left very happily.

I have to say that most people don’t expect this type of system in a town cafe and I think the main draw-back is the learning curve involved if you are expecting something more traditional but the whole system, “treat it like your own kitchen”, once you get used to it, really is easy. I can imagine next time I go there, and there will be a next time, it’ll all fall in to place immediately. Like riding a bike!

The Town Mill Bakery in Dorchester gets a good 85% for ambiance, food, service and novelty, keep it up folks!

Moreton Tearooms is a very good place to visit, you can tell that when you drive the half a mile road aproach to the Old School House in Moreton underneath a canopy of trees that eventually opens out onto a very quaint and extrmely Dorset styled 3-way crossroads. The pretty and very inviting building on the left is the Old School House and it’s a joy to enter.

Once inside you can see old pictures of past school classes and read about Lawrene of Arabia in a room that they have dedicated to him.

The menu is also full of information but the food is worth the trip from Dorchester too, make sure that you keep an eye on the Specials Board, you don’t want to miss out on anything!

The tastefully decorated interior gives off a pleasant and relaxed atmosphere and on fine days there is the old school yard, now a well laid out garden to sit in too.

Tables are waited on and the food is of a very high standard, if you want to learn more about them you can visit their website here.

Nappers Mite is a little gem if you manage to find it, at the lower, south end of the main pedestrian shopping street, it hides away in 4 sections. two inside, a central section in a covered courtyard and a very pleasant garden out back.

The small restaurant/wine bar is excellent for morning coffees right through to full lunches. If you haven’t got time for long stay then trying the Hot Chocolate with Whippy Cream and a Flake is an absolute must.

Whilst there have a read of the back of their menu’s to get an insite into the buildings 400 year history, it’s very impressive and evidence of it’s former life and builders are all around you.
